The Perfect Pair: Love Me Back and Cat Power

CatPowerLoveMeBackIntroducing a new column in which we pair reading material with music, movies, food and/or beverages, travel destinations, etc. … everything goes with reading!

First up, I’d like to suggest you pair Merritt Tierce’s disturbingly compelling novel, Love Me Back,  with the beautiful pathos of Cat Powers’ The Covers Record.

Both are acquired tastes, and not for everyone. Love Me Back follows the episodic life of Marie, a waitress and single mom in Dallas, who deals with her pain using sex, drugs, and emotional numbness. It’s not what I would call uplifting. But it’s definitely the most original story I’ve read in a long time and Tierce is an amazing writer. Cat Power’s mournful tunes provide the perfect soundtrack, especially her cover of Nina Simone’s terrifically distressing Wild Is the Wind.
