Today is a perfect time for family and for being grateful for what you have. It’s no secret that one of the big things I am thankful for is reading. Books keep me entertained as I wait for the bus. They let me and my children explore magical places together. They stay up late with me while I drink tea and wonder if I’ll ever sleep again.
for Tolstoy and Turgenev — Russian writers who first gave me a sense that there is a bigger world outside waiting.
for Harry Potter — I am reading the series for the first time this year. It’s every bit as good as everyone says.
for Alice — Alice Munro, Alice in Wonderland, Alice Hoffman, Alice Sebold, Alice Walker and Alice, I Think
for Narnia. I haven’t visited you in quite some time, but you clearly inspired Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, the best fantasy novel I’ve read all year.
for King. Stephen King. And Kids’ books. Preferably not mixed together. <Shudder.>
for sleepless nights –they’re not a burden; more of a chance to catch up with my imaginary friends.
Happy Thanksgiving, readers. We’re grateful for each and every one of you.
