Clothes based on books — what a novel idea!

This Los Angeles Times story about clothing store H&M’s new line based on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo got me thinking — what book would I want a clothing line based on?

Any time I can pair books with fashion, I get excited. How about a line based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby? H&M would have two film versions for inspiration:

The 1974 version with Robert Redford (as Jay Gatsby) and Mia Farrow (as Daisy Buchanan). A mediocre film, sure — but the clothes were fantastic!

And director Baz Luhrmann’s upcomming 2012 version, starring Leo DiCaprio as Jay and Carey Mulligan as Daisy:

Carey Mulligan

I imagine lots of flowy white Eastern Seaboard flapper dresses as well as some deep emerald green silk gowns for the Gatsby line. Wouldn’t that be beautiful? Sigh.

A line based on The Godfather could also be fun. Or The Hunger Games! What about you, readers? What book would you love to have a fashion line designed after?
