Hello North Vancouver Readers! I am the new Fiction Librarian here at NVCL, and intend to make this blog one of the first virtual stops on your reading radar.
Check in here for updates on new and notable titles, Community Reader Profiles, one-minute video book reviews, and more. (For more detailed information on the blog’s scope and contents, visit our “About” page).
By way of introduction, I’d like to offer my own Community Reader Profile:
Name: Heidi Schiller
Job Title: Fiction Librarian at North Vancouver City Library
Best book I have read this year: A Visit from the Goon Squad, by Jennifer Egan. Multiple characters lives intertwine in this vivid portrait of the contemporary music industry. Egan’s writing pops with vibrant dialogue and strangely relatable character situations.
Best place to curl up with a book on a rainy day: A cabin on Orcas Island, with a wood-burning stove and a big, soft blanket.
Best place to lounge with a book in the sun: A beach on Isla de Mujeres, Mexico.
A book I know I should read, but haven’t: Anna Karenina. I’ve picked it up twice, but can never get past page 50!
A guilty pleasure favourite: Jurassic Park, by Michael Crichton.
The book I push on all my friends because it is soooooooo good: Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell. This elaborate mind-bender features six narratives from different time periods and genres, from the diary of a clerk on a nineteenth century ship to the oral history of a near-human-relative in the post-apocalyptic future. Get past page 100 and I promise it’s a page-turner!
